Tips for Marinated Grilled Shrimp

Good grilled shrimp marinades can do a lot to enhance the flavor of your grilled shrimp. Whether you prefer spicy, sweet and sour, BBQ, or Italian marinated grilled shrimp, the right marinade for shrimp will take your shrimp any direction you want to go. These recipes include the most popular marinade recipes for grilled shrimp along with marinating and grilling tips:

Always blend marinades for shrimp in a blender so they combine thoroughly. If the ingredients of a marinade are only casually mixed together, they may separate during the marinating process and flavor your grilled shrimp unevenly.

To marinate grilled shrimp, blend marinade ingredients together. Add shrimp and marinade to a resealable plastic bag. Close and turn to coat. Reopen, remove excess air, reseal and marinate 30 minutes - 4 hours (longer = more flavor).

If you're grilled shrimp marinade contains lemon, do not marinate longer than 30 minutes otherwise your shrimp will become rubbery.

Set-aside some of your marinade so it can be brushed onto the shrimp while its cooking to add more of the marinade's flavor. Just keep a sprayer handy to control grill flare-ups.

If you also want to serve the marinade as a dipping sauce for your grilled shrimp, just make extra marinade then reduce it down on the stovetop to create a delicious sauce.

Grilling Tips for Marinating Shrimp

The best way to grill marinated shrimp is on skewers.

One skewer will work if it's metal and flat but you still have to turn them with your fingers which can be hot and difficult.

We recommend using two wooden skewers. First, presoak them 20 minutes before grilling so they don't burn (as much) while grilling your marinated shrimp.

Push one skewer through the head of the shrimp and the other skewer through the tail. Then slide the shrimp to the bottom and repeat.

Because the shrimp tend to stretch out between the skewers, you will find you can fit more shrimp (6 - 8) on one set of skewers than just a single skewer (4 - 5).

This method also enables you to use tongs instead of your fingers when flipping your shrimp on the grill.

Clean and preheat grill for medium-high heat. Lightly oil grill grate. Grill shrimp 2 - 3 minutes per side or until opaque.
